Miranda Fenster was known as the Fairy Tale Miss during the one disastrous London season that convinced her she would never have a happily-ever-after. But when her brother's love match is thwarted by the impossibly proper Duke of Kerstone, Miranda sets off to convince the duke to champion her brother's cause for love.
Unfortunately, he is too proper to consider love a suitable reason for marriage, and too proper not to marry Miranda when they find themselves compromised. Now, Miranda has a second chance for happily-ever-after, if she can uncover her new husband's darkest secret. Originally published by Kensington Zebra Ballad, October 2000.
The Fairy Tale Bride Once Upon a Wedding (Audible Audio Edition) Kelly McClymer Bushra Laskar Books
Okay, so the 'hero' holds a grudge against his mother, who was married off to a manipulative old man when she was fifteen years old. The 'hero' never feels an iota off sympathy for her no matter what her backstory reveals. The 'hero' also refuses to consummate his marriage, so he just lies to his wife and tells his wife that he's dying. His wife says she loves him (when trying to get him to consummate the marriage) and he kicks her out of bed and he continues to let her think that he's dying. Then when she finally pushes him until he finally admits whatever the heck is going on with his broody manpain and he reveals his plan was to be to fake his death, leave her, and move to the US without her, allowing her to think hi!m dead.
His rationale for this insanely selfish string of actions? 'Honor' (WTH? That makes no sense. Boo hoo he's a bastard ( literally as well as figuratively) What's honorable about abandoning your wife and faking your own death too be free of responsibilities??!).
So this 'hero' thinks it's honorable to make his wfe miserable, turn her into a fake widow while allowing her to think someone she loved died (and he didn't even have to grovel for forgiveness fort this plan). AND he's willing to make his mother miserable for the rest of her life and allow her second child toi be born illegitimate because he is so self centered that only his own problems matter. Everyone else? Who cares about their pain and problems, he has his manpain darn it! That's all that matters. Everyone else will just have to cater to his ouchies.
And then the whole thing is wrapped up in three seconds without a single character calling him on being a selfish manchild. He has to apologize for nothing. Everyone has to make him feel better, because if it isn't clear, the only thing that matters is him.

The Fairy Tale Bride Once Upon a Wedding (Audible Audio Edition) Kelly McClymer Bushra Laskar Books Reviews
I always try to find the positive in the books I read. But I hated the hero too much to go beyond two stars. Simon had to be the most selfish wimp I ever had the misfortune to read about. He made me hate the book n actually not finish it. This is one reader this author has lost. There were parts of this that was too disgustingly twisted for Jerry Springer. Nuff said
I don't know how this novel popped up on my screen, probably because I like this genre. It was free, and it has more than the usual number of high reviews for a free book. McClymer seemed to have a pretty good reputation as an author, so I got it.
It was free, so I can't claim I wasted my money, but boy did I waste my time. I'm giving this book 2 stars rather than 1 for a couple of reasons I like the heroine, Miranda (mostly). I liked that all of the women were named after Shakespeare characters. And, I really liked all of the fairy tale references.
Here's what I didn't like Simon, the Duke. I kept wanting Miranda to slap him or shake him for his rotten attitude. I get flawed heroes, but Simon was one of the worst I've ever read. He was self-absorbed, self-serving, and selfish. Seriously. Simon did not do a single thing without thought of himself and his plans. He did not consider anyone else's feelings - at least, not for long. It was all about him and his bizarre, flawed, crazy quest to create righteousness. He wasn't a rake. He was a rotten little boy too used to getting his own way and having the world worship him. He was in no way likeable.
Here's what else I didn't like the crazy, messed-up plotline. This story could have been wrapped up about 75 pages shorter than it was, right after "Mr. Watson" arrived. It was a not-unheard-of plotline (the bastard duke), and this time it was told in a rather ridiculous manner. (Again, a lot of this relates to the idiocy that is Simon).
Another thing that went wrong Bizarre jumps in time. This takes place over I guess 3-4 months, but there are gaps. Suddenly it's a month later and you have no idea what's been going on between the h&H, if anything. There's very little discussion of how their relationship progresses.
Problems with Miranda, too I said I liked Miranda. Well, I did - sort of. She initially started out as a character with spine and fortitude. She had spunk. Then she got married & it all sort of fell apart. There's little to no development of her role as duchess; she just cedes to all of the wishes of the Dowager Duchess and loses her spine. By the time she gets it back, it's too late to go back to liking her.
And the worst the ending. Honestly, I don't know what happened. It wrapped up really quickly with supreme vagueness. I'm not entirely sure what decisions were made. And ideas were developed that weren't addressed - like Simon writing to Parliament to cede his title...and then???? I really don't know. There wasn't an epilogue, and the end just didn't make sense.
I checked out the plot summaries of some of the other books in this series, and they seem intriguing. But before I pick any of them up, I will definitely check out the 1 & 2 star reviews.
The entire first quarter of the book is like reading a Young and Restless episode. Two people talking, looking at each other, than not looking at each other, pacing here and there, falling, getting up, walking in and out - I wouldn't have noticed had the tet-a-tet was interesting. It was not.
I've discovered another attribute to novels that I end up not enjoy
The back cover tells you the background of the characters, rather than the story itself. The author just couldn't be bothered with building the characters, I just have to believe the Heroine is a proper young lady, who chases an unwed man to a secluded cabin, only to realize later that night it was a two-edged sword move. Hello!!
I hate! it when a novel is timed to the 18th century, and the characters act out of that context. You can't have it both ways, placing a story in a time that both dictates the actions of the characters, and not to adhere so many of the same rulles so bluntly.
It is supposed to be a love story between a plane-jane, broke woman of nobility and a rich handsome self loathing lord, that discovers a family secret that changed him forever.
And they say women are drama queens!
It's nice that it's a freebee.
I am not going to rehash the plot here. Other reviewers have already done so. I want to add my voice in warning to potential readers this plot goes from ridiculous to farcical to bizarre. There is nothing romantic about it. It appears as if every idea of a plot that has ever occurred to this author has been thrown into this book. The result is one big boring, incomprehensible mess.
