Wow...this was a different book. The premise drew me in, so I bought it, unsure what to really expect. This was about a family terribly scarred by abuse, rape and tragedy. Hadley was fairly happy growing up even though she knew her mom was disturbed. Her daddy was always kind and attentive. Little did she know her family was steeped in a history of unimaginable abuse.
It's not until she's in her 30s she learns the awful truth about the terrible disfigurement of her reclusive uncle that lives in the woods, and about all the horrible things inflicted upon her family by her daddy's father.
This was a hard book to read at times because of the brutality this family endured, and the psychological consequences it placed on all the family members. But it was well done and kept my interest until the end.
A four-star instead of five was because of the totally unnecessary language. In one spot in particular a word that came out of Hadley's mouth was shocking and incongruous.

Oh, and I both read the Kindle version switching off with Audible, depending on what I was doing. The narrator was just okay. While reading characters words he used a dramatization that was annoying at times. I would have preferred simple pitch variations for the characters, but crying and loud exclamations in parts was just weird.
Honesty. Gets me in trouble sometimes.

The Grave Tender edition by Eliza Maxwell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I liked the book, I flew through it and even stayed up late one time reading it. So if you need an escape it is a good one. I have only two criticisms. I felt the amount and degree of bad stuff that occurred in the book was a bit too much. And the fact that evil kept happening... just not realistic. Also, the characters seemed to be so well-adjusted in spite of what happened to them. I liked the flow of the text, the metaphors,... One more thing even though I usually do not purposefully look for the point in a story, I had hard time extracting the point of the book. I suppose there were quite a few points but all of the, standard and on the surface. It would have been nice to have something deeper, so thing that would capture my mind and heart, something g to dwell on. But it was too straightforward even though very suspenseful story for that.
This is a dark tale about child abuse and how its spiraling evil impacts a family in South Texas living on the river banks. Maxwell starts out in the present with a ‘gotcha’ scenario, but it really isn’t a moment at all. From there, the author jumps around the timeline, but her skilled storytelling abilities keeps the reader from being overwhelmed by all the date changes.
The subject matter is disturbing, and some of the characters are, too. In fact, most of them are twisted in varying degrees except the ones Hadley is fond of. (Jude, Alva, and Sam). Convenient.
We are supposed to believe that Hadley is level-headed and rooted in the love of her daughter. But, at the same time, she is ready to murder her Uncle Eli when he is discovered sitting in the same room as her 11-year-old daughter. He is ugly and weird enough to be a child molester. I believe that she should take some action here, but murder is over the top. Luckily for the future of her daughter, Hadley finds that she doesn’t know the whole story in time.
Maxwell does a good job with a difficult subject, but this book is not up to the same quality as “Unremembered Girl”. Too much monologue. Lots of family secrets, but no real mystery. In the end, I did not feel thrilled at all, only depressed that so many lives were ruined by a family littered with child molesters.
I gave this novel a five star rating because it was a five star read. Ms. Maxwell’s prose was beautifully worded, her phrasing evoking picturesque images. The characters were tragically flawed, some of them irreparably damaged by their childhoods of abuse and repression. I don’t recall where I’d heard this expression, but I feel it’s true “You’re only as sick as your secrets”. The main characters of this extraordinary novel were damaged by their pasts, but even more so because of their secrets. Secrets that were passed down three generations. This novel was a dark and disturbing read. However, I feel it ended on a hopeful turn. Hadley uncovered the hidden nests of deceit and darkness, and brought them to the light. There was hope and healing through her actions, and her children would receive the benefits of these.
I really enjoyed this novel!
I thought her "The Unremembered Girl" was a 5 Star book. Although there are some lovely lines and even a bit of humor in this effort, it lacks the subtlety and beautiful prose of that book. It felt to me too overpacked and striving for intensity. I also felt that most of Hadley's silent childhood musings were beyond her years; thus, unbelievable. I did read it in its entirety and I was engaged. I guess I was hoping for something a little less inflated and more of that intricate quietness of her first book.
I Didn't know that I would like this book but decided to read it anyway. And like most books I give a chance to like I usually find a book that will change my perception of the world around me.This is one of those books. So thankful that I gave this book a chance. It had alot to say about it.I truly loved this book. What else can I say.Thank you Eliza Maxwell for the change of my perception of the world around me and for a sad but thought provoking good story.I shall now give your other books a chance. For those reading this review you will be missing out on a truly gifted writer.
I’m finding more and more that I love books that keep me thinking about them after I’ve finished; and this was one of them. Adjectives I would use to describe it are haunting, beautiful, touching, and tragic. The book follows a young widowed mother, who returns to her rural childhood home in search of answers to traumas that had plagued much of her childhood. What she discovers are generations of sins kept secret by her family (and even her friends). The book deals with some really dark topics, but does it in a way that doesn’t feel exploitative or simply added for shock value. It’s a relatively quick read, with exquisite writing, and it will choke you up.
